About Bone China

Josiah Spode is said to have developed bone china in the late 18th century in England. Spode and Wedgewood were first commissioned to design tea sets and tableware for the royal family, quickly making bone china the choice for the upper classes.

Bone china is one of three types of clay-based ceramics. The others are earthenware and porcelain. To make bone china; china stone and china clay are mixed with calcined animal bone and fired at a low temperature. It is stronger than earthware and lighter in weight than porcelain, making it the idea material for tea sets.
